Frequently Asked Questions
-------------------------------------
Are there needy Children on
Marthas Vineyard?
Yes!
There are many children growing up in single-parent families
on Marthas Vineyard. Because of the cost of living and
the lack of affordable housing, it can be especially hard
for these families. We also serve children being raised by
a grandparent or in foster care.
If Big Brothers and Big Sisters are
volunteers, why do you need to raise money?
Big Brothers and Big Sisters is a professional
casework agency. Professionals with degrees and casework training,
interview, assess, and complete background checks on all volunteers.
They also match selected volunteers with the right child and
supervise/support the relationships.
What programs does Big Brothers Big
Sisters offer?
All children have many year round activities
to choose from including beach barbecues, holiday parties,
camping trips, and kayak trips just to name a few. Our childern
are also eligible to attend summer camp through Big Brothers
and Big Sisters too. Over the past two summers over 20 Island
children attended resident summer camp with funding from Big
Brothers Big Sisters. The families generally pay $200 for
a 21-day/night session of camp.
